Lucy Bell is pleased to present Invisible a record of the collaboration between sculptor Victoria Rance and dancer/choreographer Clare Whistler. The two artists met in 1997 and have worked regularly together since then including on performances at venues such as the De la Warr Pavilion, Glyndebourne and Deptford X.

 

Victoria Rance’s ‘Sculpture to Wear’ series create a sheltering skin, protecting or altering the sense of self. The sculptures have elements of architecture and costume, and test the effect of the tension between protective constraint and freedom of movement. Examples are Mantilla, a helmet-like mask made of brazed steel eyes, and Cloak of Invisibility, a flexible aluminium cage. Performance artist Clare Whistler lets rationality and conscious thought disappear as she responds to these containing spaces. She becomes the embodiment of the sculptures when she enters or wears them. The action of taking the photographs continues this private and personal collaboration between the two artists in the studio space. 

 

Invisible includes a new series of photographs made especially for this exhibition.

 

Victoria Rance is based in Deptford London, and is a graduate of Newcastle Upon Tyne University and Kingston University. She shows extensively and has produced private and public sculpture commissions as well as a variety of work in the studio. She received the Mark Tanner Award for Sculpture in 2003. Clare Whistler lives in Ashburnham and creates her own performance pieces while working as a director in opera, education and community projects. Trained at Rambert Dance, she was a dancer and choreographer in North America with her company which toured internationally. She established True North and Shaping Voices creative companies.

 
Also included are sculptures and an archive of their studio based projects.and public performances.

Summer Exhibition

(With influences from the Dutch Masters)

Looking for emmerging trends in photographic fine art practice, the influence of the Dutch Masters on contemporary fine art practice became the overriding link

Camilla Broadbents' “past the sell by” series is a memento mori in rotting food

, referenciing the concerns of the C17th Dutch Still Life Artists. She has been inspired by the subtle use of light in paintings by Willem Kalf, the hidden symbolism of Jan Davidsz de Heem and the elegant composition of Pieter Claesz; and Abraham Migon’s evocation of the inevitable corruption of time, as ants crawl over his decaying peaches. Camilla Broadbent is a multi-award winning photographer, and has just exhibited at AOP in London.

Nigel Greens’ architectural domestic studies, reflect the topography which prevade the Dutch paintings of the 17thC, known as the Golden Age, closely observed studies of everyday life and the widespread use of the camera obscura established a precedent for “objectivity” in photography from Fox Talbot to Beuchers. The higly detailed representation of ordinary scenes in paitings by Pieter de Hooch and Jan Van der Heyden have influenced Greens own working practice.


Award winning photographer Richard Ansetts', “Woman in White Cap” is also directly linked to the portraiture of the Dutch Masters.

“It is not just the camera obscura compositions or the quest for reality in lighting that is so appealing but also the use of objects as metaphor and allegory, giving clues to the lives of the subjects. As with the paintings from this era, we are left to study and comprehend the information left to us. There is often no clear narrative and I bring this element to my images of the modern world; they are an archive of contemporary society but, leaving the viewer to consider the narrative, challenges the pre-conceptions we have of our world view.
This applies specifically to 'Woman with Wire Cap' . It explores our relationship to contemporary technology that we can feel is beyond our understanding. The cap is an aesthetic and metaphoric object but equally it is a clue to how we live in this era to a future audience. . By acknowledging the Dutch masters we are celebrating the influence on contemporary artists and audience. As artists we must explore where our ideas come from, they are never developed in isolation and it is niave to consider ourselves completely without influence. Interestingly, if we accept that there are no natural rules we can introduce new ways of seeing whilst acknowledging the importance of the past.”

While Bruce Raes, darkly light flowers and Lydia Goldblatts sensitive lighting on her subjects point to the influences of Rembrandt. " Goldblatts influences for this series come not from Victorian painting, or documentary photography, but from the portaits of artists such as Rembrandt and Carravagio, in which physical representation is paired with allegorical significance, refrenced through the use of severe black backgrounds and heavy chiaroscuro. Like many contemporary photogaphers, Goldblatt plays with the contrast between painted and photographed portraits, so that her models are pictured as individuals" Catherine Grant.


Other great masters which are included in the exhibition are Terry O'Neill, Ken Russell and Bill Brandt,

The Third Man/ 
A  Retrospective of the work of Brian Duffy

Brian Duffy, together with David Bailey and Terence Donovan was one of the innovators of “documentary” fashion photography, a style which revolutionised fashion imagery and the fashion industry of the late 50’s and 60’s . These three photographers were so influential to the changes taking place in the 60’s that they were christened “The Terrible Three“ by Cecil Beaton and “The Black Trinity” by Norman Parkinson. 

Duffy’s cutting edge photography documents the vibrancy of “the Swinging 60’s” London scene when the city was at the height of cool, and places him in the photographic history books as one of the UK’s most respected photographers. Much has been written about the impact that these three dynamos had on Vogue Magazine, photography, and London’s scene, most famously perhaps that of David Bailey. 

However, being a little older and more analytical/intellectual in his approach, it was Duffy in fact who led the way. The three were as well known as the models, actors and musicians that they photographed. These three working-class photographers tore up an effete industry with little regard for the pretensions of the old guard. Duffy himself said at the time that “Before 1960 a fashion photographer was tall, thin and camp. But we three are different: short, fat and heterosexual.” 
 
Duffy made work for magazines such as Vogue, French Elle, The Times, The Telegraph, Queen, Town, London Life, as well as advertising clients Pirelli, Biba, Smirnoff, Benson and Hedges, and had a long standing relationship with the top media titles, leading the way in both advertising and editorial imagery.
 
Duffy retired in the 1980’s after having set fire to his negatives, an act so final in its nature, that there seemed to be no going back. However, thanks to his son Chris, this collection exists (The exhibition includes 40 images from Duffy’s working life of the 50’s 60’s and 70’s) Chris has worked since August 2007 to collate his archive and restore Duffy’s rightful place at the centre of British photographic history. 
 
Sadly, Brian Duffy died on 31st May 2010. Duffy’s friend David Puttman describes  “Duffy was far more than a gifted photographer: he was a uniquely constructive “social anarchist”, who through sheer force of personality , helped  push the stultifying conservatism of the 1950’s into permanent retreat. They may not know it but every participant in what today would be reffered to as the “creative industries” will be forever in his debt………he questioned the validity of everything from the position of someone courageous enough to challenge just about every received convention he ran up against”

Award-winning filmmaker, Martyn Colbeck, has made wildlife films for over 20 years, capturing our planet's most rare and interesting species.. It was Echo and her family of elephants that inspired Martyn to devote three films to them.

In these photographs Martyn attempts to convey something of what makes elephants so special - their complex social relationships, their tenderness, their strength and their place in the African landscape. Some of the more impressionistic images explore both still and motion picture techniques creating photographs that are extraordinary and arresting.

Bruce Rae trained as a photographer at Birmingham college of Art between 1966-68, in the early 70's he attended the Royal College of Art where he attained his MA. After working briefly as a commercial photographer Rae dedicated his time to fine art photography, and became Head of Photography at the University of East London in 1996.
The subject matter is flora, however, David Lillington writing in the October 1990 edition of "Arts Review" observes that "certainly they are not about gardening." Rae is not concerned with a Linnaean attempt to describe or classify, but uses flora as a vehicle to examine his own preoccupations with mortality- "I am interested in the point at which things emerge and then disappear; in the narrow span of existence between birth and death."" The roses are open to interpretations which give them human attributes. It is possible to see them drooping, weeping, being young, middle aged or dying."

In a formal sense Rae's work concerns itself with balance, which is composition within the rectangle and tonality, which is a way of describing light. He believes that formal values are inseparable from the heart of his work.

He trained at Birmingham School of Photography in the mid nineteen sixties and at the Royal College of Art in the early nineteen seventies. His training at Birmingham was based on Commercial practice and believes without doubt that craft skills are central to any articulate Art practice. He uses wooden cameras of up to 10 inch by 8 inch formats and still uses traditional wet darkroom procedures.

The silver gelatin prints displayed here are in the main unrepeatable, most were made on a Kodak paper called Ektalure. Rae's choice of materials contributes greatly to the distinct qualities of his work and most of his favoured choices are no longer available.

During the mid nineteen nineties the fear that a lot of materials were disappearing because of the changeover to digital imaging, led Rae to experiment with early nineteenth century technology and the making of his own papers. His espousal of such processes as platinum and especially salt printing was not due to simplistic Luddism, but was a desire to continue in the production of images that completely satisfied aesthetic needs. To quote Robin Muir, curator of the Lord Snowdon retrospective at the National Portrait Gallery and picture librarian to Vogue Magazine in reference to Rae' salt prints, "This early Victorian process, all but banished into history, has it's roots in the earliest days of photography. A difficult one to master, Rae's pursuit of perfection allows for a low success rate; only a quarter of prints produced will convince him to sign and add them to his editions. The most obvious manifestation of this painstaking art, apart from the rich tones, is a sparkling texture, a subtle barely perceptible gleaming, quite in sympathy with the photographer's own brooding sensibility, enlivened nonetheless with a twinkling good humour."

A dozen of the prints in this exhibition are salt prints. They are small ,four by five inch masterpieces in miniature. They are images of shells, but their subject is form.

Malcolm Glover was born in Crawley,1955, and is currently based in St Leonards. He studied photography firstly at Newport where he obtained a Diploma in Documentary Photography, before going onto achieve an MA at The Royal College of Art in 1991. 

Glover's work has been exhibited widely around the UK. His first show: 'Llyn Peninsular' (1984) was a study of rural life and was toured throughout Wales. Glover then went on to become photographer in residence at Rochdale Art Gallery, the work he produced here took a humorous look at the people who visited health farms, and he was shortlisted for an ICI Foxtalbot Award. This work was subsequently exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery and was also bought by the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television, Bradford. 

Glover moved on to become artist in residence at the Foley Gallery in Lancaster. It was at this point that he developed the 'timescapes', which now form the main body of his work. These panoramic images - some up to 30ft in length - are a form of static tracking shots, giving the impression of a cinematic experience. Those taken from daylight into darkness show the light progressing and receding through the print. Traditionally the photographic image has trapped the viewer in one perspective and one moment of time - Glover's work attempts to remove these restrictions.


The selection of timescapes featured  'Brixton Lido' for which he won Year of the Arts award. This image was shot over a six hour period revealing certain repetitive behaviour patterns that takes place in public swimming pools. Glover sets out to portray a cross-section of British life by capturing daily rituals and events of suburban living. In the streets scenes, each house was photographed at 45 minute intervals between 9am and 7pm. The individual shots were then "knitted together" to recreate hidden moments from the entire street on an average day; the same theme is repeated in a street in St Leonards-on Sea. The unusual length of these works allows the viewer to interact with the setting as they 'walk the measure of its pavements'.
