Phil Lynott was the charismatic Irish lead singer of Thin Lizzy, who had had a great deal of success in the mid-to-late 1970’s. Sadly, he died in 1986, but this picture was taken in about 1977 on the King’s Road in Chelsea. The Punk movement had begun the year before, and we had just passed a gang of punk rockers, all with nose studs, chains and spiky haircuts. One of them had spat at Phil and muttered “dinosaur”. Phil was visibly shaken up and I reflected at the time how fickle was the game of rock’n’roll, and how quickly the moment of glory passes. For all his bravado, I remember Phil as a wonderfully gentle and chivalrous human being.
